Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Presence

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
